September is National Recovery Month
September is National Recovery Month. Every year, SAMHSA – Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration sponsors National Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. The annual theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community”.
SAMHSA has delineated four major dimensions that support a life in recovery:
- Health—overcoming or managing one’s disease(s) or symptoms—for example, abstaining from use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and non-prescribed medications if one has an addiction problem—and, for everyone in recovery, making informed, healthy choices that support physical and emotional well-being
- Home—having a stable and safe place to live
- Purpose—conducting meaningful daily activities, such as a job, school volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, and the independence, income, and resources to participate in society
- Community—having relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope
I am starting a National Recovery Month Challenge beginning today, Monday, September 3rd. Every morning I will post a question at https://www.facebook.com/LifeAfterRecoveryCoaching/. Please think about the question then post your answer in the comments section. (There may also be a Call to Action for accountability.) At the end of the month, I will gift 1 FREE coaching session to the top 5 participants who answer the most daily questions.
September 3 – What is working well in your recovery? Please share your answer!
I look forward to hearing from you!
